What is the history of two copies (BT3.204.15 and BT3.204.16) of the same text held at ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ Library—an English translation of José de Acosta’s The Naturall and Morall Historie of the East and West Indies, first published in 1604?  The readership, marginalia, binding, and provenance of these two copies are not only unique, but also provide insight into the history of ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ, that of its alumni, and the development of its extensive library over the centuries.

William Musgrave donated to the college library the Philosophical Transactions for 1683–87 in four volumes. The Oxford bookseller Richard Davis also presented the Philosophical Transactions for its inception in 1665 up to 1677. The two gifts were probably synchronised.

Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia (1544) may be an attempt to describe all knowledge, but this knowledge becomes less and less exact the further one travels from Münster’s German homelands. As the descriptions focus on the faraway lands of Asia and Africa, monstrous races appear.

²ÝÁñÊÓƵ’s copy of the first edition of Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica (London, 1687) was donated to the college library shortly after its publication by the otherwise obscure Bonfoy Trimnell (BA 1686, MA 1690).  Who was Bonfoy Trimnell and why is so very little known about him?
