Alexander De Croo visits ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ on first engagement since demitting his post as Prime Minister of Belgium
Alexander De Croo visited ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ on his first engagement since demitting from his post as Prime Minister of Belgium three weeks ago. Miles Young entertained him at ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ and showed him the Courtrai (Kortrijk) Chest. As a native of East Flanders, the visit was particularly important to Mr De Croo; the 14th-century relief front of the chest is a contemporaneous representation of the Battle of the Golden Spurs at Kortrijk in 1302 where the Flemish were victorious against the royal army of France.
In the early twentieth century, the chest was discovered by the then Warden of ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ, William Archibald Spooner, at one of the college’s holdings in Stanton St John. Find out more about the chest here from the college’s scholarly e-journal ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ Notes.
