Miranda Thomas reports on ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ Classics Society's annual talk and dinner
On Saturday 25th January the ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ Classics Society held its annual Society dinner with current students, tutors, and alumni of Classics and Ancient History degrees.
The evening started with a talk from Professor Llewelyn Morgan of Brasenose ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ on late 19th century use of Latin, which included amongst other topics, a newspaper from Aquila in Italy, a poem about beer, and another poem written by a Pope! We are extremely grateful to Llewelyn for his very entertaining talk and wish him the best for his further work on Alaudae.
The talk was followed by a drinks reception and dinner in the ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ hall which were enjoyed by all attendants. It was a lovely evening and a great chance for graduates both from recent years and from previous years to catch up on life at New and share memories about the college and their experiences studying Classics. The evening finished in the college bar and the Half Moon, two traditional favourite haunts for ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ Classics students current and former!
The Society would like to thank college staff and fellows for their assistance in organising the dinner and ensuring it ran smoothly, including Jonathan Rubery, Mark Curtis, Andrew Meadows, Brian Cole, Sheena Hinton and the entire catering team. We look forward to meeting alumni again for the ²ÝÁñÊÓƵ Greek Play in early June, of which details will be shared later this term!
