William of Wykeham had been keen to gain papal sanction and approval for many of his early actions in setting up and endowing ²ÝÁñÊÓÆµ, Oxford. The archives contain four papal bulls from the second quarter of the thirteenth century, predating the founder’s time by a century and a half. They concern the hospital or priory of St John the Baptist in Lechlade.
